Repurposing of Found Material

by Student on March 3, 2012

Our goal is to incorporate materials found on the Pratt Campus. First stop was the Pratt Comtroller’s Office. We found bags of shredded paper being trashed and decided to get creative with the material. We had the idea of building individual thought clouds in which the sound would be contained and allow for the user to have an independent experience. Using corn starch based paper mache, we began construction.

We struggled with this form (due to the edge conditions!)…In being interior design students, we were searching for a more structural material to work with. We came across cardboard tubes used in the past by EDI students. Not only are the tubes exactly what we are looking for, but they also have their own story to tell in regards to reuse-recycle-repurpose.  They have been made useful from Chicago to Brooklyn, through different life cycles, declaring that any material, when wisely designed and efficiently used, can have a cradle to cradle life cycle that render itself useful even after multiple purposes. Us using these tubes for Pratt Green Week means they will be making their fourth round of usage. For the purpose of acoustics we plan to fill the cardboard tubes with shredded paper and make use of both found materials.
