Small Studies, Big Ideas

The design team is not thinking of a literal representation of “Alice in Wonderland”. Rather, we  feel the best way to create a whole ‘new world’ is through abstraction of key allegorical elements.  We have been playing with scale to heighten the illusion of fantasy and drama.  To achieve this, we are finding new ways to incorporate versatile and inexpensive materials in new and clever ways. We plan to construct most elements out of paper-based materials, a lightweight material that could be easily manipulated in every way possible.

How to create a 3-D World?

3-D dimension could be created by a layering effect, as it adds depth and would cast interesting shadows on stage.

Easy-to-make Flowers

These flowers are made from two sheets of folded tissue paper.  These are easy to make, plus they would add a big, colorful splash anywhere on stage.

Tree-Making

For our first exploration, we used wire mesh to sculpt organic and whimsical tree forms.   Our second study was constructed out of cardboard rings; it forms a more abstracted tree structure, yet creates beautiful a repetition and casts interesting shadows.

Mushrooms

We imagine Alice’s mushroom to be oversized.  Our model was quickly made out of wire mesh and paper.  Once again, we aim to  make the best use of paper throughout our set design.
